The Pricing Problem Most Salons Do Not Talk About
If you have ever walked out of a hair appointment feeling blindsided by the final bill, you are not alone. It is one of the most common frustrations we hear from new clients who find us in Jupiter, Tequesta, and North Palm Beach. They loved their old stylist's work but dreaded the checkout experience because they never knew what the total would be.
At Suri & Noreen, we decided early on that we wanted to do things differently. Pricing should never be a source of anxiety. You should know what you are paying for, why you are paying it, and what you are getting in return. That is why we built our entire pricing model around transparency.
How Traditional Salon Pricing Works (And Where It Falls Apart)
Most salons price their services in one of two ways:
Flat-rate pricing: You pay a set price for "balayage" or "highlights" regardless of how long it takes, how much product is used, or how complex the work is. The problem? A simple half-head of highlights and a complex color correction can both be called "highlights," but they require very different levels of time, skill, and product. Flat rates force salons to either overcharge simple services or undercharge complex ones.
Vague à la carte pricing: Services are listed with "starting at" prices, but the actual cost depends on length, thickness, add-ons, and other variables that do not get explained until after the service is done. This leaves clients guessing and sometimes feeling taken advantage of.
Neither approach is great for the client or the stylist.
Our Approach: Hourly Rate Plus Pieces and Parts
We use an hourly rate combined with what we call "pieces and parts" pricing. Here is how it works:
- Hourly rate: Your stylist's time is billed at a set hourly rate. This reflects their training, experience, and skill level. You know the rate before you sit down.
- Pieces and parts: The products used during your service (color, lightener, toner, treatments) are tracked and billed based on actual usage. You only pay for what goes on your head.
This model is fair for everyone. If you have short, fine hair that takes 90 minutes and uses two bowls of color, you pay for exactly that. If you have long, thick hair that takes three hours and five bowls of lightener, your bill reflects the actual work involved.
How VISH Technology Makes This Work
To make our pieces-and-parts pricing accurate and consistent, we use VISH, a salon technology that tracks every gram of color mixed during your appointment.
Here is how it works in practice:
- Your stylist formulates your custom color at the mixing station.
- VISH's smart scale weighs the exact amount of product used.
- The formula and quantity are logged automatically.
- At checkout, the product cost is calculated based on what was actually used.
There is no estimating or rounding up. You pay for the actual product, down to the gram. And because every formula is recorded, we can recreate your exact color at your next appointment. No more guessing or inconsistency.
VISH also helps us reduce waste, which is good for both the environment and your wallet. When colorists know every gram is tracked, they mix more precisely instead of making extra "just in case."
Signature Looks: Packages That Remove the Guesswork
We also created our Signature Looks packages for clients who prefer a bundled, all-inclusive experience. These packages combine your color service, cut, treatment, and styling into one price so you know exactly what you are spending before you walk through the door.
Our current Signature Looks include:
- The Shooting Star
- The New Moon
- The Partial Eclipse
- The Sun Chaser
Each package is designed to give you the full boutique experience from start to finish. No surprise charges, no hidden fees. You pick the package that matches the look you want, and we take care of the rest.
Why This Matters to You
Transparent pricing is not just a business model. It is a trust issue. When you sit in someone's chair for two or three hours, you are trusting them with your appearance and your money. You deserve to know what you are paying for.
Here is what our approach means for you as a client:
- No surprises at checkout. Your stylist explains the expected cost before starting.
- You only pay for what you use. No inflated product charges.
- Consistent results. Your formulas are saved, so every visit builds on the last one.
- Fair pricing for your hair. Someone with a pixie cut should not pay the same as someone with waist-length hair. Our model accounts for that.
What Other Clients Ask Us
"Is hourly pricing more expensive?"
Not necessarily. For many services, it actually works out to be less than a flat-rate salon because you are paying for actual time spent, not an inflated average. Complex services may cost more, but that is because they take more time and skill. At least with us, you will know why.
"How do I know what my appointment will cost?"
We give you an estimate during your consultation or when you book. Once your stylist sees your hair and understands your goals, they can provide a realistic range. We do not like surprises any more than you do.
"Can I still get a package deal?"
Absolutely. Our Signature Looks packages are designed for exactly that purpose. One price, full experience, no math required.
