The Complete Guide to Keeping Your Color Fresh Between Appointments

The Complete Guide to Keeping Your Color Fresh Between Appointments

Your Color Does Not Have to Fade Fast

One of the most common things I hear from new clients is, "My color fades so quickly." After 30 years as a professional colorist, I can tell you that how long your color lasts has a lot more to do with what happens at home than what happens in the salon chair.

A great colorist will give you a beautiful result. But if you are washing with the wrong shampoo, skipping heat protection, or swimming in chlorine without prep, even the best color will not hold up. So let me share what actually works to keep your hair looking salon-fresh between visits here at Suri & Noreen in Tequesta, FL.

Wait Before You Wash

This is the oldest rule in color care, and it still holds up. After a color appointment, wait at least 48 hours before shampooing. Your cuticle needs time to fully close and lock the color molecules inside the hair shaft.

I know it can feel strange leaving the salon and not washing your hair for two days, especially in the Florida heat. But this one step alone can extend the life of your color by weeks. If your hair feels oily, use a dry shampoo to get through those first couple of days.

Switch to a Color-Safe Shampoo (And Actually Use It)

Not all shampoos are created equal, and the drugstore bottle you have been using might be stripping your color every time you wash. Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoos clean your hair without opening the cuticle and flushing out pigment.

Ask your stylist for a recommendation at your next appointment. We can match you with a product that works for your specific hair type and color. This is one of the simplest swaps you can make, and it makes a real difference.

Wash Less Frequently

If you are washing your hair every day, your color is going to fade faster. Period. Every wash cycles out a little bit of pigment. For most people, washing two to three times per week is plenty.

Living in Jupiter, Tequesta, and North Palm Beach, I know the humidity can make your hair feel dirty faster. Here are a few tips to stretch your washes:

  • Use dry shampoo at the roots on non-wash days.
  • Try co-washing (conditioner-only washing) once a week to refresh without stripping.
  • Pull your hair up on humid days to keep it from getting weighed down by moisture.

Protect Your Hair from the Sun

The Florida sun is gorgeous, but UV rays break down color molecules the same way they fade fabric. If you spend a lot of time outdoors (and in Palm Beach County, who does not?), your color will fade faster.

Here is what helps:

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or styling product with UV protection.
  • Wear a hat when you are going to be in direct sun for extended periods.
  • If you are at the beach or pool, wet your hair with fresh water first. Hair that is already saturated absorbs less chlorine and salt water.

Turn Down the Heat

Hot tools are a big color killer. Every time you flat iron or curl at high heat, you are opening the cuticle and allowing color to escape. This does not mean you have to give up styling, but a few adjustments help a lot:

  • Always use a heat protectant spray before any hot tool.
  • Turn your iron down to 350 degrees or lower. Most hair does not need 450-degree heat.
  • Let your hair air-dry when possible, especially during the warmer months.

How Often Should You Come Back?

This depends entirely on your service and how your hair grows. Here is a general guide based on what I see with clients in our salon:

All-Over Color or Root Touch-Ups

Every 4 to 6 weeks. If you are covering gray or maintaining a single-process color, this keeps your roots blended and your overall tone consistent.

Highlights and Lowlights

Every 8 to 12 weeks. Foil highlights grow out more visibly than balayage, so if you notice a clear line of demarcation, it is time to come back.

Balayage

Every 12 to 16 weeks, sometimes longer. This is one of the reasons balayage is so popular. It is designed to grow out softly, so you can stretch your appointments further than most other color services.

Gloss or Toner Refresh

Every 4 to 6 weeks. Toners and glosses fade faster than permanent color, so a quick refresh between full color appointments can keep your tone looking polished.

We discuss your ideal maintenance schedule during every appointment. Our Signature Looks packages are built with this in mind, so you know exactly when to come back and what to expect.

The Shower Matters More Than You Think

Hot water opens the hair cuticle, which lets color wash out faster. I know a hot shower feels great, but try to rinse your hair with lukewarm or cool water. Even just doing a final cool rinse after conditioning can help seal the cuticle and lock in color.

Also, do not leave shampoo sitting on your hair. Lather quickly, focus on your scalp, and rinse. The less time harsh surfactants spend on your colored hair, the better.

Deep Conditioning Is Your Friend

Color-treated hair tends to be drier because the coloring process opens the cuticle. A weekly deep conditioning mask helps restore moisture, smooth the cuticle, and keep your color looking rich.

Look for masks designed for color-treated hair. Avoid anything with sulfates or heavy silicones that can build up and dull your color over time.

Talk to Your Stylist

This might be the most important tip of all. Your colorist knows your specific formula, your hair's condition, and what products will work best. Do not be afraid to ask questions during your appointment. We would rather you ask than guess and end up with faded color.

At Suri & Noreen, every member of our team is trained to give personalized home care recommendations. We also use VISH technology to record your exact color formulas, so we can maintain consistency from visit to visit.
